Major March in Mexico City Against Market Regulations

A second major march by merchants is planned in Mexico City to demand the repeal of new regulations affecting local markets. Thousands are expected to participate, blocking key avenues.

Major March in Mexico City Against Market Regulations

Today, March 4, a "megamarch" of merchants is expected in Mexico City that will affect important roads. The streets that could be blocked include Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas, Avenida Fray Servando, Calzada de Tlalpan, Avenida Insurgentes, Avenida Xola, Avenida Cuauhtémoc, Avenida Observatorio, and Avenida Congreso de la Unión. The protesters demand the repeal of the guidelines published in January that regulate the activities of public markets.

Protesters are expected to concentrate at key points such as the Zócalo or the facilities of the Secretariat of Economic Development (SEDECO) in Mexico City. This will be the second mobilization of merchants protesting against measures they consider harmful to their businesses. They fear losing their spots in the markets and report acts of corruption in the procedures required by the authorities.

The march, called by the National Movement for the Rescue of Public Markets and United Markets, will gather approximately 4,000 people and affect several municipalities of the city. The protesters will meet in different areas such as the Viaducto station of the CDMX Metro, the Hemicycle to Juárez, the Park of Illustrious Journalists, Avenida 20 de Noviembre, and the Merced Market, before heading to the Secretariat of Government of CDMX.

The demonstration is already affecting traffic in some areas, such as Calzada de Tlalpan, and possible alternative routes have been proposed by the SSC, such as Calzada de la Viga and Eje 3 Oriente. The first "megamarch" held three weeks ago caused congestion in various points of CDMX. Merchants insist that they be regularized before being digitized and seek for their demands to be heard by the authorities.
