Constitutional Reform Initiative to Combat Nepotism

President Claudia Sheinbaum's constitutional reform initiative aims to eliminate re-elections and curb nepotism in Mexican politics. The proposal faces challenges from allies in the Senate, causing a rift in the coalition.

Constitutional Reform Initiative to Combat Nepotism

President Claudia Sheinbaum has presented a constitutional reform initiative in Mexico that seeks to eliminate reelection and reduce nepotism in the political class of the country. This proposal has revealed the ethical dilemma in which some members of the 4T find themselves, who have influence on crucial decisions for Mexican democracy.

Some political figures such as Ruth González, Saúl Monreal, and Félix Salgado Macedonio have expressed their interest in aspiring to governor positions, asserting that they will be subject to the decision of the people. Although they argue that there is no nepotism because they are not direct relatives who would be nominating them, President Sheinbaum has shown her discontent with this situation and emphasized the importance of not nominating direct relatives for public office.

The party leader, Luisa María Alcalde, has backed Sheinbaum by stating that Morena would not nominate direct relatives, despite the fact that the effective date of the initiative has yet to be corrected by the Chamber of Deputies. Meanwhile, the opposition supports Sheinbaum's initiative, which seeks to combat the appropriation of public positions by powerful families in various government areas.

Eradicating nepotism is fundamental at all levels of public life, both in elected positions and in direct appointments. Despite the fact that the reform initiative was approved in the Senate, the proposed effective date was changed to the year 2030, which has generated disagreements and concerns about the true interests of some politicians in the country.
