Sheinbaum Calls for Dialogue with Trump Amid Tariff Concerns

The president of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her hope to maintain a conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, with the intention of suspending the tariffs imposed on Mexican products. In her daily press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of bilateral dialogue between presidents of neighboring countries and pointed out that they will wait for this conversation before implementing a plan designed in case the tariffs continue.

Sheinbaum described the imposition of a 25% tariff as a unilateral and inconceivable decision by President Trump, despite high-level meetings and calls held between the two countries in recent weeks. The president highlighted Mexico's openness to dialogue but stressed the need for the Government to make decisions to protect the national and foreign industries present in the country, with the aim of avoiding a trade war that would affect both nations.

In this sense, Sheinbaum underscored that the impact of a trade war is not directed against the American people, but would negatively affect both nations. Given the possibility of an agreement to suspend the tariffs during the scheduled call on Thursday, Sheinbaum insisted that the announcement of tariff and non-tariff measures against the United States in the Zócalo of Mexico City on Sunday, March 9, will not be suspended, as it is necessary to face this challenge in unity.

The president invited the 31 governors and the head of Government of Mexico City to join these measures, emphasizing that this is a matter that goes beyond political affiliation. Sheinbaum mentioned the broad support in the United States in favor of avoiding damages caused by these measures, indicating that various institutions and local authorities also recognize the harms that a trade war would bring.
