At the National Conference of Governors (Conago) that took place this Tuesday, solidarity was shown in support of President Claudia Sheinbaum and the sovereignty of Mexico was defended against the 25% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The 32 governors, including those from the opposition, expressed their backing for the Mexican government in the actions it takes to protect the productive sectors of the country and the workers and consumers of both nations.
Conago expressed its rejection of the U.S. tariffs, arguing that they will have a negative impact on investment and employment. The importance of the trade relationship based on the integration of productive chains and the principles of free trade that Mexico and the United States have maintained for decades was emphasized. It was noted that unilateral measures such as tariffs affect not only Mexico but also millions of families and businesses in both countries.
The Confederation of Governors lamented that President Trump undermines the USMCA by imposing tariffs, generating uncertainty in the markets and jeopardizing the competitiveness of North America as an economic bloc.
The agreement to defend Mexico's sovereignty was signed by several governors, including Marina del Pilar, María Teresa Jiménez, Esteban Villegas, and other prominent state leaders. These governors united in support of the actions the government will take to protect the country's interests against the unilateral measures of the United States.
