Prohibition of Immediate Reelection in Mexico

The lower house of Mexico approved a bill that prohibits immediate reelection in the Constitution for positions elected by popular vote, defining a significant change in national politics.

The lower house approved a ruling that establishes the prohibition of immediate reelection in the Mexican Constitution for popular positions. This measure would mean that elected officials could not run for the same position consecutively.

The aim of this initiative is to promote renewal in elected positions and prevent the concentration of power in a single person. It is argued that the alternation of power is essential for strengthening democracy and avoiding possible abuses or authoritarian practices.

According to one of the lawmakers supporting the proposal, "immediate reelection can encourage the accumulation of power and limit the participation of new voices in politics." This measure seeks to foster political competition and ensure a more diverse and plural representation in public positions.

The ruling approved in the lower house will be sent to the Senate for discussion, and if approved, a constitutional reform would be carried out to implement this prohibition of immediate reelection in Mexico.
