The former advisor of the Federal Electoral Institute and political analyst, Alfredo Figueroa, analyzed the complex relationship between Mexico and the United States under the administration of Donald Trump. In an interview on 'Aristegui en Vivo', Figueroa criticized the American president's attitude of constructing narratives without evidence, ignoring data presented by the Mexican government.
According to Figueroa, Mexico has yielded to the demands of the United States, including the handover of criminals and the deployment of troops at the border, despite President Claudia Sheinbaum's declarations of "not submitting." He emphasized that Mexico faces a future of economic instability, with risks of recession and a high fiscal burden inherited.
The analyst also warned that the "nearshoring" strategy to attract investments will not work in a country threatened by the U.S. Additionally, he pointed out that under the Trump administration, the United States shows trends toward populist authoritarianism similar to that of Vladimir Putin.
Figueroa stressed the complexities faced by President Sheinbaum in defining the limits of submission to Trump’s demands. He criticized the lack of a firm position from Mexico, mentioning the concessions that the country has made without obtaining benefits in return.
Regarding Sheinbaum's comments comparing her strategy to the "serenity of patience" of Kalimán, Figueroa was clear in stating that she is the highest authority of the Mexican State and must decide what the limits of that submission are.
