Government Halts Construction of Power Plant in Juanacatlán

The Government of Jalisco and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) have officially confirmed the dismissal of the construction project for the thermoelectric plant "La Charrería" in Juanacatlán, Jalisco. In a statement signed by the Undersecretary of the Interior of the General Secretariat of the Government, it is stated that the thermoelectric plant will not be built in Juanacatlán and that other locations for its construction are being evaluated, although none has been definitively defined yet. Additionally, it is mentioned that if built in another site, it would be designed with a dry cooling system to significantly reduce water consumption.

"With this official information, it is clear that there will be no thermoelectric plant or installation of cooling systems in Juanacatlán," emphasized the undersecretary in the shared document. Since 2018, neighbors and activists in Juanacatlán have strongly opposed the construction of the thermoelectric plant, arguing risks to public health in nearby municipalities and to the recovery of the Santiago River. They have expressed their rejection through discussions, marches, and other forms of resistance.

Although the project was suspended in 2018, it was later resumed. However, the recent signing of the dismissal notice by the Government of Jalisco represents a significant advancement for the resistance group in their fight to prevent the construction of the thermoelectric plant in Juanacatlán. With this news, a possible definitive suspension of the project in the locality is foreseen.
