In the current administration, sex workers in the Historic Center are seeing significant advancements in the recognition of their rights. Efforts are being made to modify the Municipal Regulatory Code (Coremun) to remove the classification of prostitution as an administrative offense, which exposed them to extortion by authorities.
During the presentation of the mural "Fist Up," created by the organization Presidenta MX and the association of sex workers, the positive change they are experiencing was expressed. One of the representatives of the workers mentioned that they are no longer pursued or harassed as used to happen in previous administrations.
Sex workers seek for their work to be recognized as non-salaried labor, backed by legislation that guarantees their rights. They have requested that the administration of José Chedraui Budib guarantee non-discrimination by the municipal police and support in areas such as health and social services.
The representative of a group of one hundred workers highlighted the importance of this change, stating that they are now visible and supported instead of being victims of persecution and harassment. In this regard, the Secretary of Municipal Governance, Franco Rodríguez Álvarez, emphasized that real alternatives are being sought for them to exercise their work freely, without fear of blackmail or extortion as happened before.
