After Donald Trump announced that products from Mexico, included in the Treaty between the United States, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA), would not be subject to tariffs until April 2, President Claudia Sheinbaum thanked her American counterpart and highlighted the "unprecedented results" in bilateral cooperation.
"Thank you very much to President Donald Trump. We had an excellent and respectful call in which we agreed that our work and cooperation have yielded unprecedented results, within the framework of respect for our sovereignties," Sheinbaum expressed in a message shared on social media.
Sheinbaum mentioned that they will continue to work together, focusing on issues such as migration and security, which include reducing the illegal trafficking of fentanyl to the United States and weapons to Mexico. She pointed out that, according to what Trump stated, Mexico will not have to pay tariffs on products covered under the USMCA until April 2, the date on which the United States will announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries.
The U.S. president imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico on March 4, but the White House announced the following day a one-month pause on tariffs related to automobiles and parts manufactured in Mexico and Canada, after Trump spoke with the three major U.S. manufacturers that assemble vehicles in these countries.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick mentioned the possibility of suspending the application of tariffs for a month not only for Mexico but also for Canada, although no official announcement has yet been made regarding the latter country.
