On Friday, March 7, Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced in a video that Rogelio Ramírez de la O will leave his position as Secretary of Finance. Sheinbaum expressed her gratitude to Ramírez de la O for his work and noted that he will continue to collaborate as an economic advisor for international matters, especially concerning the relationship with the United States.
Sheinbaum confirmed that Edgar Amador Zamora will take over from Ramírez de la O as head of the Secretary of Finance. The government's commitment to macroeconomic stability outlined in the fiscal package for 2025 and beyond was highlighted.
In his farewell message, Ramírez de la O mentioned that he initially agreed to hold the position until December, but decided to stay until February to continue supporting President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the country. He thanked the team at the Secretary of Finance for their collaboration and stated that he leaves the position in good hands, referring to the qualified professionals that make up the department.
Edgar Amador Zamora, who will take the position as Secretary of Finance, is an economist from UNAM and has experience in roles related to finance and economics, including serving as head of the Secretary of Finance for Mexico City. Analysts believe that Amador will maintain the political approach of his predecessor and predict that financial stability will be upheld with his appointment.
Despite the change in the Secretary of Finance, the Mexican peso barely registered variations, showing stability during this transition. Marco Oviedo, strategist at XP Investimentos, rated Amador's appointment as secure, and the markets maintained a positive attitude in response to the news.
