The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, met with Kash Patel, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), more than a week after the transfer of 29 drug traffickers, including Rafael Caro Quintero. Patel informed through a statement that the meeting took place in the context of the deportation of 29 individuals, among them 8 persons wanted by the FBI, strengthening collaboration in pursuit of justice and community safety.
On February 27, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) announced the extradition to the United States of 29 people who were detained in penitentiary centers in Mexico. These individuals were wanted in the United States for their connection with criminal organizations and drug trafficking, among other crimes. Among the extradited were Rafael Caro Quintero, Miguel Ángel, and Omar Treviño Morales, leaders of Los Zetas, although the identities have not yet been officially confirmed.
This action was part of bilateral collaboration respecting the sovereignty of both nations, reaffirming the fight against organized crime. The transfer of the drug traffickers took place during negotiations between the head of the FGR, Alejandro Gertz Manero, and Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, in Washington, in an effort to avoid the imposition of tariffs on Mexican products by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Trump expressed his concern regarding Mexico and Canada's fight against drugs, threatening to impose tariffs of 25 percent if he did not see significant progress. Despite acknowledging improvements in terms of irregular border crossings, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress in the fight against drug trafficking, emphasizing the importance of intensifying efforts in this area.
