Michoacán Congress Approves Political Trial Against Mayor

The mayor of Coalcomán de Vázquez de Pallares, Anavel Ávila Castrejón, has seven calendar days to appear or present evidence in response to the proceedings against her initiated by the Congress of Michoacán. In a statement issued on December 27, 2024, Ávila denied any gratitude to 'El Mencho' and any links to organized crime.

The political trial against her was approved by Congress with 22 votes in favor and one against, from deputy Jennifer Aguilar Mercado, with the absence of 17 legislators. The complaint was filed by a citizen whose identity is kept confidential, according to an agreement of the Governance and Constitutional Points committees.

If found responsible, Ávila would face removal from office and disqualification from holding public positions according to local regulations. The Jurisdictional Commission will prepare a report on this matter, subject to a vote in the Congress plenary. Ávila expressed her willingness to cooperate in any investigation related to the facts and reiterated her rejection of any complicity with illicit activities.

On January 7, the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in Organized Crime of the Attorney General's Office took over the investigations of the case, where the mayor allegedly allowed the display of a banner thanking 'El Mencho' for the delivery of toys to the children of Coalcomán.
