Controversy in CDMX Congress over Bullfighting Ban

The Verde Party has called for a closure of the CDMX Congress as tensions rise with Morena over the bullfighting ban initiative. This marks a critical day for their alliance amid internal divisions.

Controversy in CDMX Congress over Bullfighting Ban

The Green Party has called for a "closure" of the legislative chamber, causing unrest among the Morena bench. Attempts to ban bullfighting have dominated the agenda of the capital Congress. Within Morena, there is resistance to moving forward on this issue due to the lack of unanimity within the party concerning considerations such as the presence of Pedro Haces Lago, son of a businessman linked to bullfighting.

The Green has gathered opposition figures to demand the ban on bullfighting, which has strained its relationship with Morena in Mexico City. Sources say that the relationship between the two parties has become complicated and there could be changes in political forces soon.

Amid this scenario, this Tuesday will be crucial in the CDMX Congress, as a citizen initiative aiming to ban bullfighting will be addressed. The session is expected to be tense, following the failure to approve a change to the internal regulations last week, which highlighted disagreements between Morena and the Green.

Green coordinator, Jesús Sesma, has called on all congressional benches to define their position and put an end to delaying tactics. Despite the resistance, the Green Party has managed to advance with a citizen initiative to limit bullfighting. Additionally, tensions are rising due to changes introduced by the Green against an anti-nepotism law that affects Claudia Sheinbaum's administration.
