Security experts have warned about the vulnerability of the infrastructure of platform X to potential hacker groups with government connections. These concerns stem from X's global influence on public opinion. Accusations of state-sponsored cyberattacks are not new, and governments like Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran have previously been linked to large-scale hacking operations against Western tech companies and social networks.
Elon Musk revealed that platform X was the subject of a large-scale cyberattack. Musk indicated that this attack was carried out with a significant amount of resources, suggesting the involvement of a highly coordinated group or even a nation-state. So far, there is no clear evidence about who might be behind this attack.
The cyberattack occurred after users of X in various parts of the world, including Mexico, reported widespread failures on the platform. According to Downdetector, a portal for monitoring outages in digital services, the issues intensified during the morning of Monday, affecting functions like content uploading, application failures, and website errors.
Frustrated users took to social media to express their displeasure, while Downdetector's outage map showed a concentration of errors mainly in different regions of Mexico. The lack of official information created uncertainty among users and led them to seek alternative solutions while the cybersecurity team at X works to track the origin of the attack.
Since Elon Musk acquired the platform, X has frequently been the target of cyberattacks, misinformation attempts, and security breaches. Although it is not the first time such incidents have been reported, the scale and sophistication of this recent attack have raised concerns about the possibility of involvement by a government entity or a highly organized hacker group.
