Mexico Strengthens National Sovereignty Laws

Mexico's Congress has approved a historic reform aimed at enhancing national sovereignty. The changes prohibit foreign interventions and impose severe penalties for illegal arms trafficking, responding to recent U.S. designations of Mexican cartels as terrorists.

Mexico Strengthens National Sovereignty Laws

The Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved a reform on national sovereignty that must be ratified by local legislatures for its enactment and publication. The bill highlights that the Mexican people will not tolerate any foreign interference that threatens the integrity, independence, and sovereignty of the nation in land, water, sea, or airspace.

The reform also establishes that any action related to terrorism will be grounds for automatic preventive detention and toughens penalties for those involved in illegal activities such as the manufacture or trafficking of weapons. Mexico's stance in favor of peace, respect among nations, and international cooperation is emphasized.

The proposal, presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum following the designation of Mexican cartels as "terrorists" by Donald Trump, emphasizes the defense of national sovereignty. In response to the statements of the former U.S. president, Sheinbaum assured cooperation in the fight against organized crime while always protecting Mexican sovereignty.

Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, has highlighted that the reform will act as a "shield" against any aggressive attempt to harm Mexico's independence. With 417 votes in favor, 36 against, and no abstentions, the Lower House approved in general the draft that modifies Article 19 and adds provisions to Article 40 of the Constitution with the aim of strengthening national sovereignty and combating the illegal trafficking of weapons.
