In Mexico, we coexist with more than 80 million domestic animals. During the conference, the Morena senator was accompanied by puppies looking for adoption, including Scarface, rescued from an operation. The senator stated that the Senate must become an animal rights house and that there will be penalties if those responsible for laboratories, veterinarians, or care fail in their duty.
"This reform has a specific purpose: to harmonize laws across the country to guarantee animal welfare, combat abuse, and foster a culture of respect," highlighted the senator during the press conference. The proposed initiative aims primarily to ensure a dignified treatment of animals, including the provision of food and water, an adequate environment for resting and moving, preventive medical care, and allowing their natural behavior.
The reform prohibits actions such as abandoning animals, abuse, the sale of animals for unauthorized purposes, keeping them tied up or caged, among others. It also emphasizes the prohibition of mutilating animals to alter their appearance and establishes regulations for the slaughter of animals in cases of pests or disease transmission.
According to the senator, Mexico ranks among the top countries in the world for animal abuse, a situation that cannot be ignored. The initiative will be presented in the Senate for legislative processing, while the proposed law includes fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of pesos, as well as arrests in severe cases of animal abuse.
The senator emphasized the importance of guaranteeing dignified treatment of animals, highlighting the need for animals in Mexico to be considered part of the family and not objects of abuse or abandonment. The law seeks to create a solid legal framework to protect animals and promote their welfare throughout the country.
