The opposition in the Senate of Mexico strongly criticized the government for its management of the tariffs imposed by the United States and for what they consider misleading rhetoric. The coordinator of the PAN, Ricardo Anaya, denounced the celebration on Sunday as an act that does not reflect the true situation, appealing to decency and dignity. For his part, the national leader of the PRI also expressed his disagreement with the situation.
The president of the Senate's Board of Directors, the Morena member Gerardo Fernández Noroña, supported the government's stance of maintaining prudence on this matter, comparing the situation to Canada, a country that has been involved in a tense dispute with the United States. However, he questioned the Mexican government's strategy, mentioning that the Secretary of Economy should have resigned.
According to Anaya, it has been revealed that tariffs were only suspended for products covered by the USMCA, representing only 49% of Mexican exports. The remaining 51% remains subject to tariffs, which evidences, according to his words, the lack of strategy and capacity of the government to handle the situation.
In this sense, it has been mentioned that products like copper could be affected soon. The PAN has criticized the attitude of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard, accusing the government of hiding information about the true magnitude of the imposition of tariffs.
Various opposition members, such as Marko Cortés of the PAN and Alejandro Moreno of the PRI, have warned about the possible negative consequences of this situation. Cortés even suggested that Sheinbaum should travel to Washington to negotiate directly with Trump to avoid further harm, stating that the crisis could lead to job losses and a depreciation of the peso against the dollar.
