Vilma Reyes Martínez, former mayor of the municipality of Santa María Huazolotitlán on the Coast of Oaxaca, was detained for the alleged commission of the crime of Trafficking of Concessions and Permits of Public Transport during her tenure. The Attorney General's Office of the State of Oaxaca (FGEO) carried out the legal action after receiving a complaint and assigned the investigation to the Regional Vice Prosecutor's Office of the Coast.
The investigations revealed that permits to operate in public transport were signed by the Town Hall of Santa María Huazolotitlán while Reyes was mayor, despite lacking the legal authority to issue such documents. After obtaining an arrest warrant from the control judge, elements of the State Investigations Agency (AEI) arrested Reyes and presented her before the corresponding judicial authority to define her legal situation.
In December 2024, the former mayor, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), concluded her three-year term that began in 2022. These events are in addition to the recent indictment of Alba Mier Castellanos, former municipal president of Mártires de Tacubaya, another municipality on the Oaxacan coast, accused of possible health crimes in the form of drug possession, according to the Attorney General's Office of Oaxaca.
