Claudia Sheinbaum Confirms Email and Phone Hacking

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed a hack of her email account and one of her phones, revealing details of the attack during the 'morning conference' this Monday, March 17. "Yes, my phone and my email account were hacked. I immediately called the Digital Transformation Agency and they took action," she commented in her morning conference.

According to the New York Times, the hacking of Claudia Sheinbaum's phone occurred after the Government of Mexico expelled 29 drug traffickers to the United States, including Rafael Caro Quintero and the founders of the Zetas, 'Z40' and 'Z42'.

The President of Mexico clarified that the phone that was attacked by cybercriminals does not contain information related to the Government. Sheinbaum detailed that this phone was a gift from Layda Sansores, now the governor of Campeche, which she kept "out of affection".

"Layda gave it to me in the adelitas movement in 2008, because I was using one that required credit and would run out (...) Then she said to me 'I’m going to give you this phone and I’ll pay for it so you don’t have that problem'," Sheinbaum recounted. Later, she registered the phone in her name and kept it for years, even during her time as head of the Tlalpan delegation and head of Government of Mexico City.

"But it is a phone that I no longer use for my more personal communication because everyone has it," the president pointed out. Sheinbaum mentioned that even as president, neighbors from Tlalpan sent her messages to that number to ask for help due to water shortages.
