The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, informed in a press conference about the hacking of her mobile phone number and email account. Sheinbaum detailed that the phone had been used since 2008, especially during her tenure as head of delegation in Tlalpan, offering it to residents to express their concerns and complaints. She also mentioned that the hacked email account is old and belonged to Yahoo.
The president clarified that both the phone number and the email account are no longer used for personal purposes, which prevented the exposure of more intimate communications. Apple contacted the Mexican authorities regarding the incident. The Digital Transformation Agency quickly intervened to review the situation and ensure the President's security.
Despite this hack, Sheinbaum assured that for official communications, she uses the government account, protected with appropriate cybersecurity measures. This safeguards the integrity of her more sensitive communications. The announcement comes after being questioned by reports from the newspaper 'The New York Times.'
