The deputies of the Congress of Mexico City approved bullfighting without violence in CDMX following the initiative sent by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada. The ruling was approved with 61 votes in favor, 1 against, and 0 abstentions. This guarantees that activities at the Bullring will continue, but under new rules.
Outside the venue, protesters for and against clashed with elements of the police of the Secretariat of Citizen Security. One police officer was injured with a possible broken nose and three people were detained and made available to the Public Ministry.
Clara Brugada's initiative on bullfighting includes key points such as the prohibition of bullfighting with violence, the creation of bullfighting shows free of violence, the prohibition of the bull's death, the protection of its horns, and a time limitation in the ring for each bull.
Despite the criticisms, Clara Brugada assured that there was collaboration with animal protection organizations and bullfighting promoters to develop the proposal. The main objective is to protect animals and jobs related to bullfighting in CDMX.
This initiative is based on previous laws seeking to protect animals, recognizing them as sentient beings and establishing ethical and legal obligations to respect their life and integrity. The constitutional amendment also prohibits animal abuse and establishes the obligation of the State to guarantee their protection and care.
The Head of Government emphasized that Mexico City is an example in the defense of animals, and that laws must match this protection. The next step is to send the ruling to the Head of Government for its subsequent publication in the CDMX Gazette, which will initiate the creation of the 'Bullfighting show without violence' figure.
