The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated in a conference this Wednesday that her country will not resume relations with Ecuador while Daniel Noboa remains president, questioning the legitimacy of his victory in Sunday’s elections. According to Sheinbaum, Noboa's triumph is "very doubtful," even recognized by the OAS.
In her statements, Sheinbaum referred to the fact that "there are no conditions for that to happen" and mentioned a person imprisoned inside the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador, which affected the sovereignty of her country. In this sense, she expressed that as long as Noboa is in office, there will be no diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
The Mexican leader also pointed out that the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, did not recognize the Ecuadorian elections in which Noboa was re-elected for the period 2025-2029. Despite the fact that the European Union and the OAS endorsed the results, there is controversy regarding their legitimacy.
It is worth noting that relations between Mexico and Ecuador have been interrupted since April 2024, when the Ecuadorian Police raided the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, a former Ecuadorian vice president accused of corruption. In response to accusations of fraud by the other candidate in the Ecuadorian elections, Sheinbaum made it clear that Mexico will not restore diplomatic ties until the situation is clarified.
