The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has denied Minister Lenia Batres of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) the registration of the term "Minister of the People" as a trademark. According to IMPI, this term could lead to public confusion about the characteristics of the position, as public positions in the Judiciary are obtained only through an electoral process.
IMPI pointed out that "Minister of the People" is a descriptive term for the services intended to be distinguished, therefore lacking distinctiveness and, consequently, cannot be registered as a trademark. This decision is based on the provisions of the Federal Law on the Protection of Industrial Property, the Political Constitution, and the Organic Law of the Judiciary of the Federation.
In November 2025, Lenia Batres requested the registration of "Minister of the People" as a trademark before INPI. Subsequently, on February 20, she challenged the decision of the National Electoral Institute (INE) that prevented her from adding nicknames on the ballots for the judicial elections scheduled for the first Sunday of June 2025.
"The 'Minister of the People' is much more than a nickname. It is a mission, a declaration of principles, a commitment," the minister expressed regarding her desire to register that term as a trademark.
