Lenia Batres Fails to Register 'Ministra del Pueblo'

Minister Lenia Batres Guadarrama has tried to register the trademark 'Minister of the People', but the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has rejected the application. Batres submitted this request on November 21, 2024, in the category of 'education, training, and cultural activities' and asserted that she began using this nickname on December 14, 2023.

IMPI issued a ruling on April 3, stating that the registration of the requested denomination was denied, arguing that it could mislead the public and confuse regarding the characteristics of the ministerial position. The institution pointed out that this title can only be obtained through a popular election conducted by the people of Mexico, which was not the case for Batres.

In February, the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) also denied the minister the use of the nickname 'Minister of the People' on the ballot for the judicial election, while the National Electoral Institute (INE) rejected the inclusion of nicknames on election ballots, considering that they could generate confusion and give an unfair advantage.

Lenia Batres explained that she did not self-designate as 'Minister of the People', but that people began to call her this way and she proudly accepted this nickname. According to the minister, this title is a declaration of principles and represents her commitment to serving the Mexican people.
