Mexico Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Ecuador Over Embassy Assault

Mexico has announced the immediate severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador following an assault on its embassy by Ecuadorian police. Tensions rise over the treatment of ex-vice president Jorge Glas, with further accusations regarding the legitimacy of the Ecuadorian government.

Mexico Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Ecuador Over Embassy Assault

Mexico has announced the immediate break of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, due to the flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Roberto Canseco, head of the Mexican mission in Ecuador, informed the media that former Vice President Glas was removed from the embassy by the National Police of Ecuador.

In April of this year, President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed the possibility of resuming relations with Ecuador, arguing doubts about the reelection of Ecuadorian president Daniel Noboa. Mexico has stated that it will not maintain relations with Ecuador while Noboa holds the presidency, citing a report from the OAS that questions the legitimacy of his election.

In February 2025, Sheinbaum downplayed Ecuador's imposition of a 27% tariff on Mexico, noting that trade between both countries is minimal. Following an alert about a possible hit on Noboa, the Mexican government denied any involvement and rejected Ecuador's accusations.

In 2022, negotiations for a free trade agreement between Ecuador and Mexico failed due to disagreements, such as the elimination of tariffs on key Ecuadorian products. Friction between both countries has been recurrent on issues such as tariffs, drug trafficking, and political asylum.

In November 2024, Interpol arrested a former Ecuadorian minister in Mexico, triggering diplomatic tensions between both countries. In May of that same year, Mexico stated that it would not seek dialogue with Ecuador following the incident at the Mexican embassy that culminated in the detention of Jorge Glas, former Ecuadorian vice president.

In April 2024, the Mexican embassy in Quito was stormed by Ecuadorian police in order to detain Jorge Glas, leading to the suspension of diplomatic relations by Mexico. The actions were condemned by President AMLO as a violation of international law.
