Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Judicial Candidates Against Allegations

This Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum downplayed the allegations regarding alleged links between candidates for the judicial election and drug trafficking, which have circulated on social media and in the media. The president dismissed this information as something spread by the "opposition" without compelling evidence and stated that if there is evidence, it should be presented to the relevant authorities.

In a morning conference, Sheinbaum highlighted that if it were true that 20 of the candidates have ties to drug trafficking, this number is minimal compared to the more than two thousand candidates in total. She criticized the use of these unfounded accusations to question the candidate selection process that will take place in June.

The president asked the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary to disqualify candidates with links to drug trafficking after the president of the Senate acknowledged the existence of candidates with such ties. Sheinbaum believes that the Tribunal will resolve any challenges with impartiality before the election.

Various complaints have emerged pointing to candidates related to organized crime and other offenses. For example, the case of Francisco Herrera Franco, a candidate for federal criminal judge in Michoacán, accused of various crimes and suspected of involvement in the murder of journalists, stands out. In light of this controversy, Sheinbaum stated that a complaint can be filed if a candidate does not meet the established constitutional requirements.
