Senate Postpones Vote on Telecommunications Bill

The Senate has decided to postpone the voting on the ruling of the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law. This decision was made in order to open a consultation with representatives from the sector and experts to improve the drafting of the law. Guadalupe Chavira, secretary of the Legislative Studies Commission, reported on this measure.

In the examination of the articles, the intention for the State to regain control over telecommunications and regulate foreigners who disseminate propaganda with discriminatory content has been confirmed. Chavira lamented that the initiative has been distorted by unfounded criticisms. She highlighted the importance of protecting audience rights and providing connectivity to all areas of the country.

The senator mentioned that they are open to listening to the opinions of experts and President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to improve the drafting of the law. It has been pointed out that the controversial article 109 of the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law will be reviewed to ensure that the government does not censor freedom of expression, a right defended by the left.

In the last Senate session, the bill was voted on, but its approval has been postponed to allow consultations that address genuine concerns. The goal is to improve the text of the law without being affected by misinformation and opposition criticisms.
