Condemnation of Murders of Activist and Son in Jalisco

The Office in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) condemned the murders of María del Carmen Morales, 43 years old, and her son Jaime Daniel Ramírez Morales, 26 years old, which occurred this week in Jalisco. María del Carmen was a member of the group 'Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco' and was killed along with her son during the night of last Wednesday in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga.

The Human Rights Committee of Nuevo Laredo decided to suspend search activities in the field due to the lack of protection from the Government for the groups searching for the disappeared. María del Carmen was searching for her son Ernesto Julián, who has been missing since February 24, 2024, and according to UN-DH, she had received threats.

The Attorney General's Office of Jalisco reported that it is pursuing several lines of investigation, including María del Carmen's work as an activist and the direct aggression against her son. In this regard, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her regret over the event and urged the state authorities in Jalisco to conduct a thorough investigation.

UN-DH joined the condemnations expressed at the federal and state levels, highlighting the importance of ensuring the protection of searchers and considering all hypotheses in the investigation. In Mexico, according to figures from the National Register of Missing and Unlocated Persons, there are more than 127,000 people missing since the 1950s.
