Protesters expressed themselves vigorously against a possible reform to the Telecommunications Law, closing one lane of Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City with slogans such as 'We will not be silenced' and 'freedoms are defended and protected'. Among the criticisms, phrases like 'We are resistance!' and 'What they want is an authoritarian state' stood out.
One of the representatives of the demonstration, Fernando Belaunzarán, stated that the government cannot decide who can speak and who cannot. The protests were held in response to an initiative that could give the Digital Transformation and Communications Agency the power to block digital platforms, which has raised concerns about potential acts of censorship.
The Senate of the Republic formally decided to withdraw the ruling on the new Telecommunications Law from the board. The president of the Political Coordination Board, Adán Augusto López Hernández, announced the organization of a discussion forum with various actors and organizations interested in providing their opinions on the initiative. This forum will begin with a meeting with the Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry (CIRT) and will extend for as long as necessary to thoroughly discuss the issue.
It is expected that the discussion on the reform to the Telecommunications Law may even lead to an extraordinary session due to the complexity of the process. Despite the criticisms and protests against it, the discussion forum is conceived as a space to hear all positions and proposals related to the legislation in this area. Out with Morena!
