The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, and the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, intended to challenge at least 20 candidacies, but this ultimately did not occur. The president, from Palacio Nacional, recalled significant past events such as Fobaproa, the disappearance of passenger trains, and emblematic massacres like those of Aguas Blancas and Acteal, citing these as legacies of the former president.
Political figures like Marko Cortés, Ricardo Anaya, and Alito Moreno, according to the president, rely on what she perceives as a representation of past authoritarianism. She emphasized that democracy is not demonstrated by loud voices, but by acts of respect towards it. A poor selection of candidates and the rushed application of a reform led to the participation in the contest of individuals who could have ties to organized crime groups in the Judiciary.
The ballots for the judicial election have already been printed and are ready to be distributed nationwide shortly. Last week the Senate admitted that 20 candidacies related to organized crime slipped into the list sent to the National Electoral Institute. On the other hand, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León wrote an essay titled “Mexico: from democracy to tyranny,” provoking immediate responses, including criticism from President Sheinbaum and revelations from relatives with links to drug trafficking.
In another area, Mexican cardinals Carlos Aguiar and Francisco Robles Ortega are prepared to participate in the conclave that will choose the successor to Pope Francis. Although the Mexicans are not considered favorites, they are being sought by others to advise in this process. President Sheinbaum celebrates the democratic debate but points out that the opposition seems to be looking to Zedillo as a new spokesperson.
The Latin American cardinals, including Aguiar and Robles, will have significant weight in the election, although it is considered unlikely that a pope will be elected again from this region. Despite not being regarded as viable candidates, their presence and decision will be important in the conclave for selecting a new Pontiff. The current scenario presents a crucial moment in the field of transformation.
