The dispute between Claudia Sheinbaum and Ernesto Zedillo began over criticisms regarding Fobaproa and the reform of the Judiciary that influenced the upcoming elections on June 1. Zedillo stated that these elections represent a farce that threatens democracy in Mexico, arguing that the government intervened in the selection of candidates without guaranteeing their ethical and professional capabilities.
In response, Sheinbaum questioned Zedillo during her 'morning' conference, asking him why he avoided mentioning topics like Fobaproa and other issues related to his presidency in the 1990s.
In a new episode of the conflict, Zedillo defended Fobaproa, criticizing Sheinbaum for labeling the matter as a fraud. The former president accused Sheinbaum's government of diverting attention with slander, insults, and threats, arguing that the bank bailout was independently audited by an international auditor appointed by the Chamber of Deputies.
On the other hand, Sheinbaum presented a video during her morning conference where she highlighted the debt generated by Fobaproa, which amounted to 1.3 trillion pesos for the year 2023. According to Pablo Gómez from UIF, in the 1990s, banks granted million-dollar loans to Mexicans, and Fobaproa began helping banks with collection problems, covering a massive amount of credits and private debts.
