Former Secretary of the Interior and head of Social Development, Esteban Moctezuma, is amidst diplomatic tensions that have complicated the appointment of key positions in the Foreign Ministry. Among the causes of discontent is the leak of images from the wedding of a close collaborator of former Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, as well as the growing influence of Pedro Matar, in charge of political coordination at the Ministry.
The controversy has reached unexpected levels by involving former president Ernesto Zedillo, which is generating collateral effects within the cabinet, especially in the Foreign Ministry. Messages are circulating in WhatsApp and Telegram groups detailing the roles played by both the current Foreign Minister Juan Ramón De la Fuente and the ambassador in Washington Esteban Moctezuma during Zedillo's presidency.
De la Fuente, who was Secretary of Health during that period and maintained a close relationship with Zedillo, being considered a possible presidential candidate in 2000, has found in Pedro Matar an important ally to maneuver in the complex environment of the Foreign Ministry.
