The mayor of Teuchitlán, Jalisco, José Ascensión Murguía Santiago, was arrested on the night of Saturday, May 3, according to sources from the Attorney General's Office (FGR). His arrest came after some testimonies pointed him out as involved in the crimes at Rancho Izaguirre.
On Friday, May 2, members of the collective Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco received authorization from the FGR to re-enter the property where investigations are taking place. According to the searching mothers, the site had allegedly functioned as a training camp for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and possibly also as a clandestine crematorium, although this last claim was denied by the authorities.
Murguía Santiago, who belongs to the Movimiento Ciudadano party, is the first public official to be arrested in connection with the investigations of Rancho Izaguirre. In this regard, federal sources have confirmed the mayor's arrest due to his alleged links to the crimes in question.
