Last Saturday, federal authorities arrested José Asunción Murguía Santiago, mayor of Teuchitlán, Jalisco. The arrest occurred due to his alleged involvement in activities carried out by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) at the Izaguirre ranch. Murguía Santiago, who was a member of the Citizens' Movement party (MC), was transferred to Mexico City under an arrest warrant against him.
Mexico's prosecutor, Alejandro Gertz Manero, recently confirmed that the Izaguirre ranch in Teuchitlán was used as a "training camp" by the CJNG. However, he clarified that there is no evidence that it was used as a crematorium. According to Gertz, the Attorney General's Office has evidence confirming that the site was used as a recruitment, training, and operational center by the cartel.
On the other hand, an investigation is underway to see if there are other possible "narcorrals" and their potential connection to the ranch found in Jalisco. Genetic tests will also be conducted on the clothing found at the site to determine if they belong to missing persons.
The case of the ranch in Teuchitlán has increased pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum to address the disappearance crisis in Mexico. It is estimated that more than 120,000 people remain unaccounted for in the country since the 1960s.
