Senate Challenges Judge Candidacies in Mexico

The president of the Senate Board of Directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, announced that this Sunday the Congress of the Union will formalize the presentation of challenges against about twenty candidates for judges. These have systematically and permanently granted protections to alleged members of organized crime, as well as others who do not meet the suitability requirements imposed by law.

In a live broadcast, Fernández Noroña stated that it is a "handful" of "solid" challenges and anticipated that the names of the designated judges would be revealed. He emphasized that these types of challenges have no deadline and can be presented as soon as information about the lack of suitability is available. He asserted that they have firm data on this and that the legal team of the Senate has worked on their presentation.

"We have a package of individuals who did not meet the constitutional requirement of obtaining at least eight points on the rating, and a group that were defenders of organized crime groups," noted the president of the Senate Board of Directors.

Fernández Noroña detailed that after the National Council of Morena, which will take place next Sunday, he himself will present the challenges along with his counterpart from the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna. He mentioned that they have already outlined reasons with solid arguments to support the challenges.

Additionally, he recalled that the previous week, the legal area of the Senate withdrew its challenge against the agreement of the National Electoral Institute (INE) regarding the candidacies to integrate the Judiciary, as it did not disagree with it.

Regarding the specific challenged candidacies, Fernández Noroña mentioned that there are precedents for the withdrawal of candidacies prior to the electoral day, which could apply on this occasion.
