Controversial Meeting for Morena Party Leadership

The Morena party meeting raised concerns about President Claudia Sheinbaum's leadership as demands for changes in campaign regulations and nepotism were not firmly addressed.

Controversial Meeting for Morena Party Leadership

The National Council meeting of Morena this weekend left a bittersweet feeling in the National Palace, as no firm stance was adopted regarding critical issues such as early campaigns, nepotism, and reelection. These positions go against the reforms proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. It was even suggested that Alfonso Durazo would organize a new meeting to strongly reaffirm the prohibition of reelection for the 2027 elections.

In the lead-up to the meeting, Luisa María Alcalde shared a letter that included Sheinbaum's observations on the future of the movement, highlighting criticism of ostentation, early campaigns, and hereditary positions. However, these opinions did not resonate powerfully during the Morena meeting.

It is striking that the party is approaching Havana, coinciding with the growing influence of Marco Rubio, a strong opponent of the Cuban regime, in Trump's cabinet. In contrast, Sheinbaum's stance seems to distance itself from this political line.

A change in the dynamics of Morena is evident, which used to be a direct vehicle of presidential objectives in the past, but now seems to have evolved into a deliberative environment where the president's voice does not hold supremacy. Additionally, there is mention of the lack of a trusted political operator for Sheinbaum, which has led figures like Rosa Icela Rodríguez, César Yáñez, and Carlos Morales to not fully assume that role.

Within the meeting, it is mentioned that Durazo moderated the criticisms of early campaigns arguing that the opposition also conducts them, and that it would be counterproductive to give an advantage to PAN and MC.
