Mexico faces indecorous proposals that jeopardize its sovereignty. Instead of responding immediately to such provocations, a counterproposal could be considered that involves serious and ambitious collaboration between Mexico and the United States. This proposal suggests that the United States play a key role in training and equipping elite Mexican commands to effectively dismantle the transnational criminal networks operating in Mexico.
The results obtained previously through similar collaborations have proven to be successful and have even been defended before the Trump administration. A new formula is needed to address the current challenges in security in Mexico. Despite the threat posed by large cartels in Mexico, the greatest concern is their penetration into municipal governments and the national territory.
The proposal for a 'security alliance' between Mexico and the United States would allow for the selection of priority targets, the certification of authorities, and the disarmament of criminal commands, among other aspects. This would require deep and bold collaboration, in line with the objectives outlined by Trump regarding security.
The protection of Mexico's sovereignty is a crucial point in this proposal, rejecting the presence of American soldiers on its territory. The main mission would be to weaken the cartels and achieve the pacification of the country. This strategy entails a significant challenge for the current government.
The possible signing of a binational or trinational agreement to establish this 'security alliance' is an option being considered, with the premise of concluding the agreement before Trump’s term ends. The refusal of Mexico City’s Mayor, Sheinbaum, to Trump’s intentions of deploying troops in the country shows a commitment to national sovereignty and the pursuit of internal solutions.
Since the signing of NAFTA in 1994, Mexico has maintained a close relationship with the United States in economic terms. This trinational relationship has been defended and improved by various Mexican governments, regardless of the political party to which they belong. The rescue and protection of this economic sovereignty is a fundamental goal to keep in mind. Continuing to strengthen this relationship, but now in terms of security, could be a significant step to address the current challenges in Mexico.
