Sheinbaum Responds to Trump's Tariff Threats

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has authorized the Department of Commerce and the Trade Representative to begin the process of imposing a 100 percent tariff on any foreign film that enters the country. This measure aims to protect domestic production in the film industry.

In response to Pedro Sánchez, President of Spain, who blamed private companies for a massive blackout in the country, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, recalled a previous attempt to privatize the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) by Ernesto Zedillo. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of keeping services like electricity in the hands of the state.

The General Director of Unilever Mexico, Mildred Villegas, announced an investment of 30 billion pesos that will be distributed among the company’s plants in different Mexican states. This investment seeks to strengthen the British company’s presence in the country and generate local employment.

Sheinbaum denied that the water agreement with the United States was made out of fear of Trump’s tariffs, explaining that it is about complying with the Water Treaty of 1944. The President clarified that, due to the drought, it has been difficult to meet the water quotas established in the treaty.

In another statement, Sheinbaum reacted to the new tariff proposed by Trump for foreign films, preferring not to engage in a media debate with the U.S. president. The President highlighted the good communication she has maintained with Trump since he took office and clarified that decisions are made based on Mexico’s interests and not due to external pressures.

During her 'morning' press conference, Sheinbaum also highlighted a significant investment from Unilever in Mexico and announced the distribution of funds among different plants in the national territory. The President reiterated the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship with foreign trade partners and safeguarding the interests of the Mexican population in all economic and commercial decisions.
