PRI Defends Former President Zedillo Amidst Criticism

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), led by its national leader, Alejandro 'Alito' Moreno, issued a statement in defense of former President Ernesto Zedillo following criticisms he received from the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum and disqualifications from the Morena leader.

Alejandro Moreno described the criticisms toward Zedillo from the federal government as unjust and out of context, highlighting the Zedillo period as one of responsibility, state vision, and democratic commitment during a complex moment in national history. He emphasized that the current government's accusations aim to delegitimize the democratic transition led by PRI governments, which laid the foundations for the current freedoms and constitutional guarantees in Mexico.

"The current officials lack the moral and political stature to accuse others," Moreno expressed, accusing Morena of having destroyed the Mexican democratic system in the last six years. He also supported Zedillo's proposal to submit major projects of the current government, such as the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, the Dos Bocas refinery, and the Maya Train, to an independent international audit to determine responsibilities for possible acts of corruption.

The PRI leader stated that the party supports the ex-president's stance regarding the current situation in Mexico and reiterated its commitment to the defense of democracy and institutions. This support comes amid a public conflict between Zedillo and Sheinbaum, where the former president has criticized the Morena judicial reform as a "farce" that weakens the independence of the Judiciary and strengthens the executive power.

For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum has labeled Zedillo as a "spokesperson for the PRIAN" and criticized his participation in the 1995 bank bailout (Fobaproa) and other events from his six-year term, such as the Acteal massacre. She defended the judicial reform as a measure to return to the people the right to decide on the Judiciary and accused the former president of being part of an opposing strategy to delegitimize the transformations of the Fourth Transformation.
