The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to the criticisms received regarding a reform initiative to the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law that she sent to Congress, after YouTube users in Mexico reported the airing of a new advertisement from the U.S. government on this platform.
In this advertisement, self-deportation of migrants encouraged by President Donald Trump is promoted, where Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem invites undocumented migrants to use the CBP Home application to self-deport and avoid fines and imprisonment.
The advertisement, which lasts 30 seconds and is dubbed in Spanish, highlights that more than 100,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested under Trump's presidency and that troops guard the U.S. borders. Additionally, a compensation of one thousand dollars is offered to each undocumented immigrant who self-deports through the application.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected the airing of these advertisements and has sent an initiative to Congress to reform the Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law, aiming to restore the ban on broadcasters from disseminating political or commercial propaganda from foreign governments.
The proposed reform also establishes that digital platforms cannot sell advertising space for the dissemination of advertising or propaganda from foreign governments if their content is available within Mexican territory. The discussion of the initiative is currently on hold, after the Senate announced that it would open the topic for public discussion.
