Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned about a possible plan in case Donald Trump ends the USMCA, a treaty that unites Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The president expressed her desire to maintain the treaty but also stated that they are prepared to defend it and lead negotiations if necessary.
In a conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of defending and preserving the USMCA due to the benefits it brings to the three countries, highlighting that the Mexican economy is highly integrated with that of the United States and Canada, a situation recognized by the US government.
Additionally, the president mentioned that, thanks to the USMCA, Mexico has received preferential treatment regarding Trump’s tariffs. Despite acknowledging the US president's concerns about alleged breaches in trade agreements, she ruled out that these are sufficient grounds for canceling the treaty.
Trump has mentioned the possibility of reviewing or eliminating the USMCA in 2026, which has generated uncertainty. Both Mexico and Canada agree on the importance of maintaining the treaty and are willing to negotiate to ensure the benefits for their countries.
Sheinbaum has pointed out the relevance of strengthening the trade treaty, integrating the economies of the three countries. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of economic cooperation and maintaining constant communication with the United States due to its position as the most relevant economy in the world.
