Local legislators supported an initiative to strengthen the State Protection Council as a concrete measure to guarantee the rights of journalists and human rights defenders, sectors that face increasing risks due to their work in the state.

During a working group led by deputies Plácida Calzada Velázquez, Miriam Reyes Carmona, and Ana María Esquivel Arrona, as well as deputies Jesús Hernández Hernández and José Salvador Tovar Vargas, the urgency of equipping the Council with greater operational capabilities, sufficient resources, and effective monitoring mechanisms was highlighted.

"This strengthening must be the primary instrument that enforces rights," emphasized Deputy José Salvador Tovar, who stressed that protecting a journalist is preserving the right to information for an entire community.

The proposal was supported by all participants in the meeting, who agreed on the need to realize protection as a real guarantee and not just a normative one.

Deputy Ana María Esquivel highlighted that human dignity must be the unbreakable pillar of any legislative action, while Deputy Jesús Hernández noted that without free and critical journalism, citizens lose their ability to know the truth and participate in public life.

Representatives from the Legal Advisory Council, the Human Rights Prosecutor's Office of the State of Guanajuato (PRODHEG), the Institute of Legislative Research, and other agencies with competence in the topic also participated in the session.
