In the state of Sonora, a judge has ruled in favor of two trans minors, an 11-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, granting them the opportunity to change their gender and choose the name of their choice on their birth certificates. This is a historic event as these are the first gender identity rectifications taking place in the region.
The efforts to achieve this advancement were carried out by the collectives Sonora Trans and México Igualitario Derribando las Barreras A.C. The General Directorate of the Civil Registry of Sonora accepted the first rectifications for the gender change in trans minors, challenging the provision of "adults" established in the Civil Registry Law of Sonora.
María Fernanda Velarde, lawyer and president of Sonora Trans A.C., explained that the action of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation was crucial for the Congress of Sonora to allow rectifications for minors under 18. In the face of a lack of progress, Velarde filed a lawsuit that ultimately led to the ruling in favor of the minors.
In a statement, it was highlighted that Sonora Trans A.C. and México Igualitario Derribando las Barreras A.C. have implemented a legal strategy to protect this population through complaints for non-compliance with declarations of unconstitutionality.
The minors, identified only as V and A, made the request through their legal guardians and, after an initial denial, were finally able to access the modification of their birth certificates to reflect their true gender identity and chosen name.
"Claudia and Elena are the mothers who accompany their daughter and son," the statement emphasizes. They, along with the rest of the family and the social environment of the minors, have witnessed the positive and healthy development of V and A in accordance with their gender identities.
