Claudia Sheinbaum on T-MEC's Future Amid U.S. Concerns

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has declared that the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (USMCA) has not been respected, although she opened the possibility of ending it. In response to the question of whether the agreement was "dead," she stated that Mexico is prepared for any circumstances that may arise.

Regarding security coordination between Mexico and the United States, Sheinbaum mentioned that the seizure of three million fentanyl pills on U.S. territory and the detention of 16 members of the Sinaloa Cartel demonstrate the good coordination that exists between both countries. She emphasized the importance of the United States also fulfilling its part in combating fentanyl trafficking.

Sheinbaum highlighted the ongoing coordination with the Trump administration on security matters and expressed that the USMCA has been beneficial for the three countries. Despite Donald Trump's suggestion to terminate the agreement in its next review in 2026, the president expressed the desire for the trilateral trade pact to be maintained, highlighting the importance of economic integration among the involved countries.

The president of Mexico emphasized that since Trump took office, the USMCA has remained in various aspects, although there have been challenges in sectors such as automotive, steel, and aluminum. Work is being done to resolve these issues in collaboration with the private sector in Mexico.

Sheinbaum expressed that her government hopes the USMCA review or renegotiation will be minimal and highlighted the coordination with the private sector to review export and import issues. In talks with the secretaries of both Finance and Commerce from both countries, work continues within the framework of the USMCA. She also pointed out that so far, they have not received signals that the agreement will disappear.
