Carlos Canabal Ruiz, former interim mayor of Cancun from 2004-2005, has escaped in Nuevo Leon despite warnings of a possible flight if he were granted house arrest and had his geolocator removed. The legal representative of the company LV, harmed by an amount of 531 million pesos by the former official Xavier Olea Trueheart, had warned about this situation when Canabal Ruiz requested an injunction to remain under house arrest due to health issues.
House arrest with an electronic bracelet and permanent police surveillance was granted to him; however, it was revealed that the former interim mayor of Cancun escaped on April 26, although this information was only made public on May 7. A judge immediately issued an arrest warrant against him.
So far, the whereabouts of Carlos Canabal are unknown, who is also a media businessman and owner of the newspaper La Verdad in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. This businessman has various complaints against him for unjustified dismissals and lack of payments to Social Security and staff from his companies.
Eduardo Hernandez, a Control Judge of the common jurisdiction of Nuevo Leon, declared Canabal to be evading justice and issued a re-arrest warrant. It is known that he fled his home in San Pedro Garza Garcia on April 26. At the time of his capture in February 2024 in Tulum, he was being processed by the authorities.
Canabal's management in Cancun was controversial as he was linked to the appropriation of land and properties in the city.
