27 Officials Detained in Mexico's Segalmex Corruption Case

Raquel Buenrostro, head of Mexico's Anticorruption Secretariat, reported 27 officials detained in the Segalmex scandal involving a 15-billion-peso embezzlement. Ex-director Ignacio Ovalle remains under investigation. President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed zero tolerance for corruption, calling for stricter legal reforms. The case is Mexico's largest corruption scandal during AMLO's presidency.


27 Officials Detained in Mexico's Segalmex Corruption Case

The Buerosro, head of the Secretariat for the Fight against Corruption and Guarantee of Good Management, informed that in the framework of the investigation of the corruption scandal related to the Federal Agency for Guarantees in microfinance (Segalmex), responsible for less than 27 actions or former government officials. However, the former head of the agency Ignasio Ovall is among them. His work, according to Buerosro, is under review by the following organizations that also issued additional orders for detention. Regarding the direct question, whether there is a process of de facto actions, Buerosro replied: "This is a question for the fiscal."

Buerosstro made the necessity to review the Law on Administrative Responsibility, so that sanctions for whistleblowers could be more stringent. "We consider that it is necessary to change in any moment the Law on Administrative Responsibility, due to there are serious violations of rights, and the strictest measure — it is the limitation in the annual period", — she said.

The deal Segalmex was named one of the cruelest financial scandals in the history of the country, with damages in the amount of 15 billion pesos. According to independent experts, this is the most widespread corruption affair during the presidency of Andres Manuel Lopez Obadra.

President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed the persistence of the fight against corruption, stating: "No immunity. So, we claim that there is no immunity before any manifestation of corruption."
