Salinas Pligo Threatens to Go to Inter-American Court Over Tax Dispute

Following a dispute with President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding a debt payment with the SAT (Tax Administration Service), businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego stated that he will turn to international bodies such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. 'Furthermore, she has instructed the SAT to deny us our constitutional right to petition,' he stated in a communiqué. Over the weekend, Salinas Pliego claimed that there was an agreement with the previous administration under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid a 'double taxation,' based on 'dozens of conversations.' In response, the Undersecretary of Human Rights, Arturo Medina Padilla, and the Fiscal Prosecutor, Grisel Galeano García, denied the alleged agreement with the magnate. 'At Grupo Salinas, we will continue to exercise our right to defend ourselves, even by appealing to international bodies such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights,' the company said in a statement released on social media on Wednesday. 'It is concerning that, from a position of prejudice and from the highest tribune in the country, the Fiscal Prosecutor discredits our right to access justice.'
