Sheinbaum Demands Review of U.S. Anti-Drug Protocol

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a review of the protocol after the U.S. attacked a drug boat in international waters, which she claims fall under Mexico's jurisdiction.

Sheinbaum Demands Review of U.S. Anti-Drug Protocol

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she had asked the foreign minister to meet with the U.S. ambassador to discuss improving the protocol for combating organized crime in international waters. This request came after the U.S. intervened on Tuesday against a boat allegedly carrying drugs in international waters, which, according to the Mexican leader, was in Mexico's territorial coordinates. Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico disagrees with such interventions and has its own protocol that has proven effective. The president's proposal is to conduct joint operations with the Mexican Navy to arrest the crews of boats suspected of links to drug cartels when they are near the country's international waters. Sheinbaum also cited two reasons for concern: the risk to the lives of Mexican citizens and the possible presence of a Mexican national on board, regardless of their alleged criminal involvement. The U.S. ambassador expressed his willingness to review the existing protocol and propose improvements. Sheinbaum confirmed that if survivors are found after similar U.S. attacks, Mexico will intervene, as it is a humanitarian issue and a matter of international law.
