Mexican Transporters Block Highways in State of Mexico

Mexican transporters from the Alliance of Independent Transporters of the Mexican Republic (AAA) blocked several highways in the State of Mexico on Monday, demanding increased security and the location of Fernando Galindo, a 69-year-old truck driver who has been missing since last Thursday, October 30.

The drivers are calling on the State of Mexico's Prosecutor's Office to take immediate measures to locate the man alive, who was last seen in the municipality of Jilotepec de Molina Enríquez (State of Mexico), where, according to the collective, a criminal group operates.

In addition to the search for Galindo, they demand that the state government work more effectively to combat the acts of extortion, thefts, and disappearences suffered by the sector.

Accompanied by blockades on the Mexico-Querétaro, Circuito Exterior Mexiquense, and Arco Norte highways, the protesters raised the barriers at toll booths to avoid payment on the toll roads.

The alliance assured that the blockade will continue until the authorities report on progress in the search and have threatened to go to the capital's Zócalo if they do not receive a response.

In less than two months, three truckers have been kidnapped for not paying a weekly fee of about 500 pesos that the organization demands from them to circulate. A month ago, following another protest, two of the kidnapped truckers were released with signs of violence in the same municipality of Jilotepec.

Mexico accumulates more than 133,000 disappearance reports, with an increase of more than 5,000 cases in the last quarter, according to data from the National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons (RNPDNO), which counts disappearances since the 1950s.
