Political Power Struggle in Iztapalapa

The head of the Iztapalapa delegation, Aleida Alavez, seeks to extend her influence, while the head of government, Clara Brugada, tries to reclaim the territory. An intense power struggle is underway within the MORENA party for control of the capital's most populous delegation, threatening a political crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political Power Struggle in Iztapalapa

The head of the Iztapalapa delegation, Aleida Alavez, seeks to extend her influence after coming to power, while the head of government, Clara Brugada, intends to reclaim the territory that was once hers, and for this, the chosen one appears to be local deputy Martha Ávila, who stepped down from last year's contest due to political agreements. Similarly, Iztapalapa is of great importance to Morena as it is the most populous delegation in the entire capital and has the largest budget. In addition to the mayor and the head of government, other players could include, for example, federal deputy Dolores Padierna, with strong internal influence, and her party colleague Gabriel García, who also aspires to a delegation in CDMX. The mayor herself leads one of the factions as she seeks to extend her administration with the help of a figure who would report directly to her, if Morena ultimately prohibits re-elections internally. Brugada confirmed that Pablo Yánez will replace Encinas in the Secretariat of Metropolis. As reported by LPO, one of her bets is her partner, Alejandro Ojeda, who already holds significant power within the delegation and who, some sources say, acts as if he were already the mayor. Now, having achieved this after Clara Brugada handed it over as part of the 2024 political agreements, she does not want to let it go, which creates strong tensions within the 4T due to the clash between groups seeking to head the ballot in the upcoming elections. In response to this, according to sources from the mayor's office, Alavez insists that they are not married and, therefore, these obstacles could be lifted by 2027. Due to the existing tensions with Morena (which have already been expressed on several occasions), the 4T believes that the mayor could advance a political and electoral agreement with the Green Party, the most unruly ally of the governing coalition, which threatens to play alone in the next elections. The mayor of Iztapalapa, Aleida Alavez, maintains her ambitions to remain in power at the head of the capital's most populous delegation and for this, she is already designing a series of plans to achieve her goal. As reported by LPO, one of these options is to promote her partner, Alejandro Ojeda, whom she defends by assuring that he is not her husband and, therefore, would be outside the anti-nepotism principles promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The former federal deputy pursued the mayorship of the eastern part of the city for much of her political career. One of the possible links in this potential move could be local deputy Rebeca Peralta, who works in Iztapalapa and has already been seen at internal meetings of the green party despite belonging to the 'tucan' in the Palace of Donceles. In this way, Iztapalapa seems to be the delegation with the most internal problems heading into the 2027 elections. The problem is that Sheinbaum's fight against nepotism could hinder her ambitions. This is why various groups are vying for the positions elected there, because, in addition, the opposition is not strong, which makes a Morena candidacy a sure win.
